VOTING IN MASSACHUSETTS

Who can vote in Massachusetts?
To vote in Massachusetts, you:
• must be a Massachusetts resident and a United States citizen
• must be at least 18 years old on or before the date of the next election
• must be registered to vote
• must not be under legal guardianship with respect to voting or convicted of election fraud.

The cutoff day for registration is 20 days before a town election and 28 days before a national or a state election. The deadline to register for the October 18, 2004 Special Town Meeting is October 9, 2004 and the deadline to register for the November 2, 2004 General Election is October 13, 2004. There is no length-of-residency requirement.
Registration is permanent as long as your address and name remain the same and you return your local census form annually. Changes should be reported to the Westford Town Clerk by completing a voter registration or party enrollment change form.

How do I register to vote?
You can register to vote using a mail-in registration form, available at the Town Clerk's office by calling 978-692-5515. Once completed, take or mail the form to the Town Clerk's office.
You can also register to vote in person in many places:
• at any town clerk's or city election office in Massachusetts. Westford Town Clerk's office is on the first floor of Town Hall, 55 Main Street, and is open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

•at the following Massachusetts agencies:
–Registry of Motor Vehicles
– Food Stamp Program- Assistance for Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)
– Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC)
– Medical Assistance Program
– Commission for the Blind
– Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
– Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission
– Department of Mental Health
– Department of Mental Retardation
– The Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Currently, there is no way to register online in Massachusetts.

What about enrolling in a political party?
You may register to vote as a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or Massachusetts Green Party member. These are the four official parties in Massachusetts. You may also decide not to be signed up for any political party, that is, "unenrolled," or you can register under a "political designation," which is a political party that is not considered an official party in Massachusetts.

Where do I vote?
Westford has six voting precincts. Contact the Town Clerk's office (978-692-5515; townclerk@westford.mec.edu) if you don't know where to vote. The polling places are:

4

What if I can't get to the polls on election day?
You may vote absentee if you are a registered voter and unable to vote at the polls on election day. To get an absentee ballot, you must fill out an application form (available from the Town Clerk) or write to the Town Clerk (55 Main Street, Westford, 01886) giving the address to which the absentee ballot should be sent. Allow enough time to get the ballot back to the Town Clerk by mail or in person by 8 p.m. on election day. It is not necessary to have an absentee ballot witnessed.

You can apply for an absentee ballot at the Town Clerk's office up until noon on the day before an election.
