Westford
Historical Society Book Discussion
The
Book Discussion Group will meet on Tuesdays in February this
year. The sessions will start at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 3, 10, 17,
and 24. This year we will be reading the collected manuscripts
of several Westford residents. Kate Hamlin, who was born in
1847, wrote her Reminiscences in 1937 of Westford Center which
she dearly loved. Frederic Fisher was born in 1855, and in 1931
also wrote about the Center he remembered from his youth. Alice
(Prescott) Collins, born 1886, gave a lecture in 1966 in which
she discussed life in Forge Village. May Balch, born 1875, did
the same, discussing the Parkerville section of town. If time
allows, we will also take a look at the Journal of Leonard Wheeler.
Mr. Wheeler gave his journal many, many years ago to Rita Miller
when she was in junior high. At the time, she wondered what
kind of gift a musty old journal was. Finally as an adult who
fully appreciated our town's history, she realized its true
value, and three years ago she gave that journal to the Westford
Historical Society. All of these works are treasures, which
provide us with an opportunity to see the town and life through
their eyes.
Weather
permitting, we plan to walk the Center on a Saturday or Sunday
during the month in their footsteps. We look forward to having
you join us for this Book Discussion group. There will be a
minimal fee just to cover the cost of copies. Call 978-692-5550
or e-mail museum@westford.com to sign up.
