“Explorations” – Watercolors and Handmade Paper Reliefs
Joyce L. Youngberg
Art Reception at the PCA, December 6, 2009, 1:00-4:00 p.m., Joyce L. Youngberg
The Parish Center of the Arts invites you to join us for the opening reception of
“Explorations” – Watercolors and Handmade Paper Reliefs by Joyce L. Youngberg,
on Sunday, December 6th, 1-4 pm.
Music at the opening by Mr. Mark Connolly at the grand piano.
Sweets and hors d’oeuvres will be served at the December 6th reception.
Sundays, December 13, 2009 - December 27, 2009,
noon - 2 p.m. Joyce L. Youngberg
Many of Joyce’s featured paintings are of New England scenes and the coast and countryside of northern Europe,
including England and Scotland.
Although the viewer can readily identify the subject,
Joyce takes care to find the abstract quality of the shading and shadowing by glazing to achieve deep shadows and intense sunlight.
Joyce builds layers in her watercolors with the deep and dark color often seen in Homer’s paintings.
She then adds abstract layers, sculpting the textures, light, and Hopper-like shadows.
Often, she returns to a subject to paint it again wrapped in snow or bathed in sunlight to give the viewer a new way of seeing things.
The exhibit will be open during gallery hours every Sunday from December 13th -27th, from noon to 2 p.m.
About Joyce L. Youngberg
After receiving her BFA in Painting, Joyce spent a number of years exploring various media, learning the techniques of ceramic sculpture, exploring bauernmalerei, and harvesting fibers and creating handmade paper.
She brought all these experiences, plus observations of world travel to the elementary classroom as an art teacher in New York and Massachusetts, training the next generation of artists to see beauty in the everyday.
At the end of her tenure with the Ayer School District, Joyce began the development of her current watercolor techniques under the guidance of prominent New England painter, Harding Bush.
Visit Joyce at www.joycelyoungberg.com.
The exhibit may be viewed during gallery hours on Sundays
from noon to 2 p.m., and by appointment.

November 2009 Gallery Exhibit
Phyllis Hughes and Judi Babcock
Art Reception at the Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Phyllis Hughes and Judi Babcock
Join us for the reception of a joint show of oil and acrylic paintings by Phyllis Hughes and Judi Babcock.
Phyllis will be showing her colorful New England landscapes
while Judi will be exhibiting dancers from around the world.
Sundays, Nov 1, 8, 15 and 22 , noon
- 2 p.m. Phyllis Hughes and Judi Babcock
View luminescent, tranquil New England landscapes by Phyllis Hughes.
View Judi's vibrant, colorful acrylic paintings of Curacao's Carnival celebration,
St. Martin's Caliente dancers, Filipino dancers, ballerinas and others.
They are fun and will make you smile!
About Phyllis W. Hughes
Phyllis W. Hughes started painting early in life learning traditional basics and rigorous classic techniques.
She spent summers in Rockport studying with many of the famous marine and landscape crowd of the fifties:
Stanley Woodward, A.T. Hibbard, Emile Gruppe, Ken Gore, Harry Ballinger, Jack Callahan and Mildred Jones who specialized in portraits and still life.
She passes on these skills to her classes at the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society and the Concord-Carlisle Continuing Education classes where she has taught since 1967.
Phyllis believes realistic painting should transcend replication.
The painter's work is to interpret familiar objects or scenes to reveal new insights:
the calm of pale morning light, the structural strength of a tree, the fragile luminescence of a branch,
the rhythms of the ocean. In starting a painting she draws with a brush, making a tonal pattern capturing the rhythm of the composition,
then seeks colors to transmit the ambiance of the scene.
She loves the buttery texture of oils to make rich color fields and appreciates the fast drying characteristic of acrylics for transparent glazes and spots of light opaque colors.
Her engineering proclivities tend to attention to detail while employing dynamic brushstrokes to suggest rather than define.
She heartily supports cultural literacy in literature, music and art and wishes there were international exhibits,
concerts and competitions in these fields instead of wars.
About Judi Babcock
Judi is a professional social worker and child therapist. She began studying art in 1992. She has studied with Phyllis Hughes, Maris Platais, Linda Paul Gordon and others.
She painted a series of Carnival scenes, which were inspired by a trip to Curacao during its celebration in 2007. These were very successful, one was recognized at the Bedford Day exhibit that September.
Encouraged by this honor, she went on to do a series inspired by the Caliente dancers she saw in St. Martin, as well as Filipino dancers, ballet dancers and others from festivals around the Boston area.
These colorful, vibrant paintings have been exhibited in a variety of venues around Lexington, Bedford and Malden.

About Laurie G. Miller
Although spending much of her career in a corporate setting, creating art has always been an important part of Laurie G. Miller’s life.
As a recovering cancer patient, Ms. Miller had ample time to reflect on her mortality and goals yet to be accomplished.
With her 50th birthday pending in October 2009,
she decided that a solo art show would be a great way to bring friends and family together for a happy celebration.
Starting in the summer of 2008, she set off with the ambitious objective of completing one painting each week.
“Reflections on Fifty” is the culmination of that year long project.
Ms. Miller, a watercolorist for many years, studied under such notable artists as Walter Garver, Paul George, George Shedd,
Carol Marine, Andrew Kusmin and Nancy Russo.
She recently switched to oils and immediately fell in love with the medium.
Her piece “Morning” won 1st place in the Professional Oil/Acrylic category at the Westford Regional Art Event 2009.

June 2009 Gallery Exhibit
DUO / SOLO ART SHOW
Arlyss Becker
About Arlyss Becke
The June 3-29 art show at the Parish Center for the Arts in Westford, Massachusetts will display two distinct presentations
from Arlyss Becker.
One part of the show will be a group of mixed media landscape paintings that reflect ideas of the delicate balance one feels
during a process of healing or disrupting change in one's life. The red skies of these paintings signify a place of strength and
validity. The path to that strong place can be prolonged, convoluted, and uneven as is shown differently in each painting.
The other part of the show is a group of wall hangings made from handmade paper made by the artist.
The hangings are hand sewn and are embellished with embroidery, added beads, buttons, found objects, and light dashes of painting and gilding.
Some of these garment hangings are stand-alone pieces and some are framed, giving a closeted look.
The homespun aspect of this work reflects the beauty in domestic work that is worthy of wall display.
Arlyss Becker showed work at the PCA in 2002.
She taught in the Westford Schools for over 20 years, the last 11 years at Westford Academy.
After retirement, she moved to Downeast Maine and has been a working artist since the late '90s.
She has explored many themes in her work over the last ten years as she values "ideas" that invite her to probe deeper.
Themes related to the magic of books, women's issues, aging, struggles with health, women facing breast cancer,
the joys of music, and visualizations of growth. Her work mixes imagery and abstraction as she invites observers to participate
in a conversation about what is being viewed.
This show will hang through June.
The artist welcomes all to come to the opening reception on June 7th, from 1 to 4 PM.
She will also be at the PCA on the 20th, 21st, and 28th. She will give a gallery talk on each of those days at 2 PM.
Her special invitation goes to former students and faculty of Westford Academy and the other Westford Schools.
The exhibit may be viewed from June 3 - 29, during gallery hours on Sundays,
from noon to 2 p.m., and by appointment.

January 2009 Gallery Exhibit
Wabi-Sabi Boxcar
Scott Murray
Sundays, January 25 - February 22, 2008, noon
- 2 p.m. Scott Murray
"Freight trains rush by us like great metallic snakes, yet
they are often overlooked ... except maybe when they block
one's way at a crossing. Even then, they do little more
than cause us to wonder when they will pass so that we can
be on our way. They are just so mechanical, so industrial,
so plain.
Yet one day, when walking along some rails searching for
nature subjects to photograph, a splash of boxcar graffiti
caught my eye. Moving closer, patterns in the rust, twists
in the scrapes, and spidering in the paint began to expose
themselves.
These character details are united by the wabi-sabi aesthetic.
‘Wabi-sabi is the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent,
and incomplete. It is a beauty of things modest and humble.
It is a beauty of things unconventional.’ (Wabi-Sabi
for Artist, Designers, Poets & Philosophers by Leonard
Koren)
The wear and tear, the graffiti attacks, the weather, and
even damage have an impact in transforming parts of the
uniformly produced boxcars into uniquely painted canvases.
In the series of images Wabi-Sabi Boxcars, I bring
forth an aspect of the boxcar that often goes unnoticed."
What better way to view a new perspective on a prevalent
part of Westford's landscape, as well as other recent works
of local and regional scenics and landscapes on display
and for sale. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
About Scott Murray
Mostly concentrating on photographing the unique flavor
of New England and Maritime Canada, Scott's subject matter
of choice, and to some degree style, are greatly influenced
by his childhood years spent within walking distance of
Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and Walden Pond,
and frequent family camping trips in New England.
The photographers that have most influenced Scott are Ernst
Haas, Eliot Porter, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Galen Rowell,
and more recently, Wynn Bullock. Scott describes the success
of his images when they evoke a new thought or feeling,
or simply show a subject in a fresh or enjoyable way. Scott
resides in Westford with his wife and two children.
