Completed planning phase

  • Established a formal set of goals and objectives
  • Received the endorsement of the Board of Selectmen and the School Committee
  • Received the endorsement of the Special Town Meeting (11/99)
  • Established a web site to allow us and other groups to communicate with the public
  • Kicked off our activities with the Bob Brooks presentation which was attended by over 100 people
  • Set up a small Peaceable Action Team to meet more frequently and interact with various organizations to further our goals and objectives

Developed and implemented additional means for communicating and achieving goals and objectives

  • Initial Flyer developed, printed and distributed
  • Articles in the Lowell Sun and Westford Eagle
  • Featured in Cable Show with Geoff Hall, "Legislative Update" in February
  • Received solid support from the Kiwanis as they selected "Westford 2000 – A Peaceable Community" as the theme of the Apple Blossom Parade
  • Obtained a banner (maroon and gray) and marched in Apple Blossom Parade, staffed information table
  • Conducted town-wide forums, successfully engaging participation from many community organizations to begin the town-wide conversations
  • Distributed Peaceable buttons to the town officials at May Town Meeting and distributed flyers
  • Expanded web site to contain volunteer sign-up and ‘thank-you’ to businesses who have supported us
  • Supported Blanchard PTO programs: Bob Brooks, Dr. Steven Michelson, Jack Agati, and a panel on Adolescent Health Issues
  • Posted events for various groups on the website
  • Supported the start-up phase of the Teen Peace Initiative and acted as the umbrella group for the Teen Peace Initiative Essay Contest
  • Acted as umbrella group for the Westford participants in the Million Moms March

Other Accomplishments

  • Safe Homes program is being worked on by a group after the community meetings
  • The Fletcher Library promoted "Storytimes" with a theme created by the Youth Services Dept. supporting Westford 2000 – building a Peaceable Community – respect, friendship, teamwork
  • Obtained ‘giveaways’ for the Apple Blossom information table ("$1 donation suggested") of Peaceable buttons, gold- wrapped chocolate hearts (symbol of love) from the Westford Candy Store, and of polished rose quartz stones (symbol of peace and harmony) from Illuminations Book Store
  • Backstops with the Peaceable Community logo have been ordered for all the recreation areas
