Support FAQ for the Email Service

The westford.com email forward service provides email forwarding to any  electronic mail box on the internet. This process works almost the same way as when the US post office forwards your letters if you move. Forward accounts do not collect mail. All mail will simply be redirected to the specified forward address. Sign up here for your westford.com email address.

Electronic mail boxes (physical POP boxes) can be set up in several ways. If you have a commercial Internet dial up service, you will most likely get an electronic mail box with that service.  For example, if your dial up service is with Shore Net, then your electronic mail box address would be something like user@shore.net. Electronic mailboxes are also available for free using certain web based services such as Hotmail. Many businesses and corporations also provide electronic mail boxes for their employees.

We now provide two types of email service - email forwarding and email POP3/IMAP accounts. Select the links below for answers to the appropriate service.

Email Forwarding. Forwards westford.com email to a different email account.
POP3/IMAP/ Email Account. Full email service on the westford.com
server.

Q. How should I configure my email software for forwarding?

A. Follow your ISPs directions for configuring your email software. Get your new email mailbox (physical POP box)  up and running using the mail service at your ISP.  When you are sure that everything is working,  change your computers email software "return address" or "reply-to address" to be your westford.com (virtual) email address. All mail sent to your westford.com address will be forwarded from our system to your email account at your ISP. Note: a few services, such as AOL will not allow you to change your return address in your email software. The email forward will still work, but your return address will show your ISP (physical POP box) address.

Q. I do not receive email sent to my westford.com address. What should I do?

A. Since the email forwarding service is made up of two parts, you must first run a simple test to see which part is broken. Send an email to your account at your ISP. For example, if your dial up connection is with shore.net, and your user name is jsmith, the address for your account would be jsmith@shore.net  If you can receive email sent to your ISP account, but do not receive email sent to your westford.com account, please fill out this support request form. If you do not receive email sent to your ISP account, please contact your ISP. Tell them that you are having trouble receiving email at the account with them (i.e., jsmith@shore.net)  Once they fix the problem, the westford.com forward should automatically work. If it doesn't then please contact us.

Q. I can not send mail, what should I do?

A. Check with your ISP and make sure that your "out going mail" settings are correct in your email software on your PC. Most outbound mail settings will be in the form of "smtp.yourisp.com" or "mail.yourisp.com" Your ISP can provide you with the specific settings for your service. If you contact your ISP, you will need to refer to your ISP account name. Do not refer to your westford.com forwarding name, since they won't know what your are referring to.

A. Yes. There are a few commercial web based email managers that will work with your westford.com email address. We have tested our forwarding service with the Web2Mail service and the anti-spam SpamCop.Net service. These services allow you to set the return email address as your westford.com address. You can then access your ISP POP mail box using the access information (username, POP server, password) provided by your ISP.
(For Web2Mail setup, enter your westford.com address as the return email address. Then use your ISP account information for checking your email. For SpamCop.Net, your POP mailbox will now reside on the SpamCop server and you would configure your return email address in the SpamCop Options section.)

Q. How do I configure the email client on my PC?

A. Using any email client, like Outlook, Eudora or Netscape, set the "Incoming Mail Server (POP3)" as westford.com The out going mail server should be your SMTP server of your ISP service, such as smtp.comcast.net, outgoing.verizon.net, etc. Set the email and reply address as "your_email"@westford.com. You will also need to enter your account name and your password as part of the setup. If the first part (before the @ sign) of you email address is less then 8 characters long, your account name is the same as the first part of your email address. If you can not access the ISPs outbound SMTP server, you can use our server relay.pair.com

For security reasons, you may need to set up at least one email account with your ISPs email service before you can send email. If so, set up one email account on your PC according to your ISPs instructions. You do not have to use that email account, but you will need to have your client check that mail box before you would be allowed to send any mail through your ISP. This is done to prevent email abuse (SPAM) from originating on your ISPs network.

A. If you use software on your PC, such as Outlook, Eudora or Mail, you software will most likely remove email from the mail server after you download your email. You can view your email though webmail if you set you mail software on your PC to leave the mail on the server for a few days.

Q. Emails sent to me keep bouncing back to the sender with an Over Quota message. What is wrong?

A.All email accounts have a maximum size for there email box. If there is too much email on the server, no new email will be allowed to go into your account. You must remove some old emails from the server. Most software programs will do this automatically. If you only use webmail, then you must remove old emails periodically. In webmail, you can save emails as a text file on your local PC.
