Hunting
Game Preserve Rules
Preserve hunting only allowed from September 15, 2007 through March 31, 2008 inclusive.
Bird Hunting not permitted during the deer hunting season: November 26th through December 31st inclusive.
A preserve hunt must be reserved in advance.
We recommend weekday hunts whenever possible. Sign your name on the preserve calendar for the day you wish to hunt. This is a first sign-up basis and only one person or group may hunt on that day unless agreed upon between the parties involved. Do not sign up for days you do not intend to hunt. Duly scheduled hunts will be posted on the WSC Web Site and published (when possible) in the newsletter.
All persons hunting must have a current and valid Massachusetts hunting or sporting license.
"One Day Hunting Permits" are available for all interested parties
The club has obtained 10 such permits for use during the season.
The Shooting Game Preserve Chairman is our authorized agent. (Al Unger 978-256-4403)
Hunters requesting a permit must make themselves available to meet the authorized agent’s schedule.
No late night or last minute calls will be accepted.
Hunting is limited to club members and their guests.
A club member must accompany all guests.
Non-club members are only allowed to participate in two hunts before membership in our club is required.
Hunter orange hat is required.
On Sundays hunting only allowed after 1pm.
The sign indicating a hunt in progress must be posted at the entrance, on the post for the gate.
All birds harvested must have a tag attached to it’s leg prior to being removed from the premises.
The tag must remain on the bird until the bird is prepared for consumption. Tags shall not be used more than once and shall be immediately destroyed upon removal from bird. Tags are available on the Shooting Game Preserve cork board. They are in an envelope on the board.
You are only permitted to harvest those birds you have released or were released for you. You are allowed to harvest Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock during the normal legal season for those species. No tags are required for Ruffed Grouse or Woodcock.
Only the following birds may be liberated and harvested.
Pheasant
Bobwhite Quail
Chukar Partridge
Hungarian or Gray Partridge
A Daily Report must be completely filled out and submitted to the Shooting Game Preserve Chairman. Leave it in the mail box to the right of the cork board.
A receipt for the birds purchased and released must accompany the Daily Report. Birds must be purchased from a valid source within the state of Massachusetts. (We do not have an import license.)
Club grounds are open to non-hunting members. (Please avoid stocking areas.)
Indoor and outdoor Pistol, Big Bore and Trap ranges and the pond will be open during all hunts.
Please keep dogs leashed and out of stocking areas
Wearing a hunter’s orange hat is recommended.
All other hunting is permitted as per Massachusetts Law, though stocking areas must be avoided.
Stocked birds may not be harvested on the release day by anyone not registered for the hunt.
Individual and Club Hunts:
If you conduct a hunt, you are responsible to insure compliance of all our Shooting Game Preserve rules. You must pick up and plant your own birds, which were obtained from an approved Massachusetts farm. We DO NOT have an import license, therefore you must purchase birds within Massachusetts. Contact Al Unger for details (978-256-4403). You must pay for the birds at pick-up. The receipt for the birds must be turned in with your Daily Report when the hunt day is concluded. Leave all paperwork in the mail box next to the Shooting Game Preserve cork board by the key card door down stairs at the club.
Pick-Up bird hunting:
Club members are allowed to hunt the property for previously released birds on any day(s) following a hunt. All Shooting Game Preserve Rules must be followed including the submission of a Daily Report and use of game tags. We recommend a donation of $10 per bird harvested be made by check to the WSC Scholarship Fund.

Process for Bird Pick-up

Avicultural Exchange - Tom Doherty 978-392-1254. (Other breeders in Mass were used successfully last season for winter hunts after deer season. Availability varies based on weather.)
Call Tom 2 days ahead of your scheduled pick up. Check on the type of pheasant he has. Last year he had Golden’s, Chinese, And Manchurian. The Manchurians are big birds.
Tom’s bird farm is at 104 Providence Road in Westford. Providence Road is off Main street. A good landmark is Whitney's Auto.
Tom has plastic boxes for us to use.
Please return his boxes when the hunt is over.
Contact Tom for arrangements regarding the pick up of your birds.
Cost per bird is to be determined by the breader and may be adjusted as the season progresses. The cost of feed has gone out of sight.
Please don’t walk out to the flight pens. The less contact with people the birds have the better they fly.
Questions call Al Unger at 978-256-4403
Make sure you turn in the receipt from Tom with the daily hunt report.
Your birds will be crated on a dog crate to the left of the truck that’s jacked up. Leave your money/check in the envelope/plastic bag.
