| Outing Type |
Requirements: These requirements are intended to allow the scout to demonstrate that he has the skills necessary to be safe on some of the troop’s more challenging outings. Please: The tour leader and scout master can often make an exception for these requirements. But the scout must ask them in advance for them to determine if it’s OK. |
| Cycling |
- Attend the Troop Meeting presentations on cycling.
- Complete a Bike Safety check.
- Participate in a Troop scheduled bicycle “shakedown” (ie. the trip to Sullys)
- Helmets must be worn by all cycling participants.
|
| Backpacking |
The troop will usually offer a “dry-run” backpacking shakedown prior to the outing. Experience shows it’s strongly advised that new scouts participate in this shakedown.
- Complete a Troop Meeting pack check.
- Attend troop backpacking presentations.
|
| Skiing |
- Be at least 2nd class.
- Already know how to ski or snowboard. (If the scout has not been on a ski trip previously with the troop, he should discuss his ability with the tour leader prior to sign up).
- Helmets, approved for skiing or snowboarding, must be worn at all times by any scout or adult.
|
| Winter Camping |
The goal is for the scout to build up readiness for Winter Trek by participating in various prior troop outings throughout the calendar year. Winter Trek is awesome but it shouldn’t be anyone’s first outing.
- Be at least 2nd class.
- Participate on at least one prior T159 backpacking trip.
- Participate on a “cool-weather” camping trip (can be the same as the backpacking trip). Cool weather is typically defined as November-> March tent camping.
- Attend troop winter camping presentations.
- Complete a Troop Meeting pack check.
- Helmets must be worn for any sledding or tobogganing activities. Bicycle helmets are acceptable for this.
|
| Water Paddling |
- Complete First Class Swim Test (see Scout handbook).
- Attend troop water-outing presentations.
- Participate in the designated outing shakedown
For “Fast Water” canoeing the tour leader may designate stronger paddlers as “stern qualified”. |
