Get Ready for a Great Adventure to the Blue Mountains

Troop 591 is always looking for new adventures and we think we’ve found it!  Troop 591 has decided to hit the road in the summer of 2006, heading to the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation, located southwest of Roanoke, Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The Reservation covers over 16,000 acres of forest, mountains, and lakes – making it the second largest Scout Camp in the country!  Blue Ridge offers dozens of merit badges, and five different high adventure programs for scouts 13 and up.  There is backpacking, canoeing, swimming, riflery, back powder rifle, a climbing tower, a ropes course, and whitewater rafting.  Of course, there will be lots of opportunity to explore and work on rank advancement, improve your camping skills, and just have fun with your friends!

Programs for All Scouts

Blue Ridge offers an incredible experience for all scouts, whether they have been to Boy Scout summer camp before or not.  Scouts will have the opportunity to earn merit badges and rank advancement, sleep in a tent, and work in a patrol.  In addition, they will get a first-hand opportunity to work on the points of the Scout Law and learn about leadership.

Programs for Advanced Scouts

Scouts 13 and older may have the option of participating in one of several High Adventure programs, including the High Knoll Backpacking Adventure, Claytor Lake Aquatics Base, Mountain Man Outpost, Fish Camp, and New River Adventure Program, including whitewater, rappelling, and ropes course.

More Information to Come

We’ll provide updated details about this great adventure at upcoming troop meetings.

History of the Reservation

The Blue Ridge Scout Reservation is located in rural Pulaski County, Virginia and comprises over 16,000 acres.  It is the largest council-owned reservation in the country.  In 1950, the Blue Ridge Council bought 600 acres of land from Radford College.  The council wished to build a new scout camp as the one they were using at the time was on land rented from the government and was located outside of the council area.  On this newly purchased land, Camp Powhatan was constructed in 1950.  When an opportunity arose in 1957 to purchase additional land, the Council, through a massive fund raising effort, did so at a cost of $3.68 per acre.  Since that time, the reservation has expanded to include two scout camps Powhatan & Ottari, the High Knoll Trail, The New River Adventure Program, Claytor Lake Aquatics Base, Fish Camp, and Mountain Man Outpost (see links below).
